Vandal walks up to a woman and her son, with the son being named Jonas; both being shot and killed. Then we jump back to the present day, Rip Hunter, a time traveler, recruit a team of legends to save the past, present and future of Earth, starting with Vandal Savage. The team he recruits is The Atom, White Canary, Hawkgirl, Hawkman, Captain Cold, Heatwave and both halves of Firestorm; saying to them to meet him at a pier in Central City. They all show up, with Rip Hunter, showing off his time machine, the Wave Rider, with the A.I. of Gideon commanding the vessel. Their first trip in time is to St. Roch Secondary School, New Orleans, in 1975. Rip Hunter, Atom, Professor Stein, Hawkman and Hawkgirl go to find Professor Aldus Boardman, an expert on Vandal Savage, Hawkgirl and Hawkman, showing that Vandal was always in the back of major events in time - we also learn that Aldus is the son of Hawkgirl and Hawkman's past reincarnation from late 1940. While Jax, Heatwave, Captain Cold and White Canary stay behind, but Captain Cold, Heatwave and White Canary go off drinking in a bar and may of caused a bar fight.

With Jax by himself on the Wave Rider, a time bounty hunter, named Chronos, comes blasting at the Wave Rider, this is where the team is alerted and runs back to the time ship. Aldus is wounded in the epic laser fight, but the team is able to turn the fight around and escape from the bounty hunter. While travelling to a Time Limbo - a place where time doesn't occur, Rip Hunter tells the truth about why he recruit them onto the team. They were uneventful within time, and the reason why he was the one to attempt to stop Vandal was because his wife and son, Jonas, were shot in front of his very eyes. Needing a team to stop Vandal, he recruited them - the team are slightly pissed off with him about lying to them about their futures. But the team come to their senses and forgive Rip Hunter, deciding the only people in their lives that can make their futures are themselves. So of the team shoot to try and track Vandal down.
