Eddie the Eagle Review
Ever since he was a little boy Michael "Eddie" Edwards had always wanted to go to the Olympics, his mother was supportive but his father was not. After many breaks and bruises his dad convinces him that he just isn't fit for the Olympics. So he goes to work his dad to do some plastering, but this is where he discovers skiing, as well as the Winter Olympic Games. But as he grows, he trains harder and harder - getting on to the Winter Olympic team but he doesn't qualify for the Olympic standard. So he travels to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Training Facility, in Germany, this is where he meets the Flying Finn - Matti Nykanen and a drunken snow groomer, Bronson Peary - later discovering that he an Olympic Medalist in Ski Jumping, for the USA. He easily completed the 15-metre ski jump hill, then trying on the 40-metre hill but he injuries himself on landing. Bronson tells him to give up but Eddie's spirit is too large. Seeing how determined Eddie was, Bronson teaches him to land the jump, but doesn't want to be called his coach.
Then jumping the 70-metre hill, he lands it thanks to Bronson's training. Then he travels back to England to tell the British Olympic Association that he will be representing Great Britain as a Ski Jumper. But they tell him that he has to make a jump at least 61 metres to qualify. Going back to Germany, by stealing his father's campervan - he picks up Bronson and travels round Europe trying and trying to make the magical 61 metres. On his last try-out hill, he makes 61m on his first try, making a British Best - but on his second run he crashes. But the British Olympic Association record his 61 metres, agreeing to take him to the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. He completes the Olympic Jump making 60.5 metres, making a British Olympic Record, the crowd love him, naming him Eddie the Eagle. But Eddie sees that he is being seen as a clown, rather than a competer. Feeling the need to be successful, he takes part in the 90-metre hill - making a jump of 73 metres, setting a new British Olympic Record.
This movie was such a great family fun movie. I really lived it. Based on the true story of Eddie the Eagle's Olympic Journey, he funny and showed the real determination for Michael "Eddie the Eagle" Edwards. Eddie was played by Taron Egerton, playing Eggsy is the film "Kingsman: The Secret Service", his acting was really great, perfectly mimicking Eddie the Eagle's real personality. Bronson Peary was played by Hugh Jackson, famous for playing Wolverine in the X-Men Films. Hugh had various funny lines and his drunken ex-ski jumper's turn of heart was really well played. The barmaid, Petra, played by Iris Berben, this being her first British film, was really good and funny, she was the perfect mix of clingy and loving. I give this film a 8.5/10.
Overall: Great Family Friend Film.
Final thoughts: "Eddie the Eagle's real determination to succeed."
